From passion to profession

Meet Thomas Pilgaard Nielsen, a senior architect at Netcompany, whose interest in IT has been a common thread throughout his life.

Read on to learn about how Thomas enjoys making his big passion his livelihood.

I have always wanted a career where I can delve into the technical aspects. However, I also enjoy explaining my decisions and discussing solutions with my team.

As a senior architect, I have the opportunity to work in the sweet spot between a managerial role with leadership responsibilities and a specialist role with technical expertise. In short: the perfect career path for me.

Varied everyday life

Currently, I am working on a project for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sit at their office on a daily basis. The project is broad, which means I get to advise, support, and work with various technical solutions in close collaboration with the client. No days are alike, and I get to see things through from start to finish. That’s something I truly appreciate.

Room for development

I chose to become a consultant because I wanted to try out many different things. I thought I would be hopping around from project to project, but so far, I have been involved in the same project for several years. It has pleasantly surprised me due to its diverse nature and has provided the perfect foundation for my development.

Freedom to choose

I come from a small town in Jutland, and when I was hired, I had the option to choose which of the three Danish offices I wanted to be based at. I chose Copenhagen, but it is good to know that I have the flexibility to choose differently later on, if I ever feel like moving back home. And who knows? Maybe one day I’ll have the opportunity to work at one of our international offices for a while.

IT as a passion

I enjoy spending my spare time with my wife and my numerous hobby projects, which typically involve IT in one way or another. In my latest leisure project, I wrote software to control the lighting system at home, which I was tired of not being able to schedule automatically. Now, it can be timed! My hobbies provide me with insights into various areas of IT beyond what I work with day to day. It is great because IT is not only my job; it’s also my passion.
